The Tooth Tooth and Nothing But The Tooth
We use our mouths every single day;talking, eating, smiling, kissing, yawning -the list appears endless. If one follows the advice to clean our teeth twice a day as we should, statistics have shown that we spend at least 24 hours a looking at our mouths in the mirror as we clean our teeth!
Interestingly Align Technology did a survey recently which revealed that nearly 40% of us worry about the appearance of our mouth at least once a day rising to over 50% in the 18-29 age range. Mouth anxieties are not only related to the teeth. Indeed as cosmetic dentist we assess the essential tripod; lips, teeth and gums. However according to the research our anxieties centre more on teeth, than the peripheries .
Let’s concentrate on the peripheries today. I’m going to talk specifically about the gums.
Ever looked at someone and thought- that’s too much gum showing. Well you’re not wrong.
The smile line or esthetic zone – the teeth that are showing when you are smiling – is determined by several factors, including:
- The shape and size of your lips.
- Your facial muscles.
- The shape and size of your teeth.
- Your gum tissue.
The optimal smile line appearance should reveal the least amount of gum tissue possible. Gum tissue visible in the smile line should have balanced, even contours that are in harmony with the upper lip.
To correct this we can carry out laser gum reshaping or periodontal crown lengthening surgery to increase the height of the teeth and if needed using porcelain veneers to improve the aesthetics of those teeth.
•Complete in 1 visit
•Instantly reduces the “gummy” look
•No stiches or bleeding.
•Minimal recovery time.
•Comfortable and easy appointment
Laser smile contouring is a great way to get rid of that “gummy smile!”
Laser contouring is a non-surgical advanced method for shaping and changing the gum tissue around the teeth to create an esthetic and pleasing shape for your smile.
Unlike traditional dentistry which involves a scalpel and often stitches, the laser is a very small device that contours the gums to shorten the gummy smile, lengthen the appearance of the teeth, and correct uneven gums. Because the laser seals as it moves, there is no need for stitches, there is no bleeding and very minimal recovery or maintenance, and usually takes only one visit.
However only 1-1.5mm of tissue can be removed with laser, if you need more removed then we could refer you to the gum specialist. This procedure involves lifting the gum and remodelling the bone.
